Sculpture "The Boys of Valmiera"
The heroes of the most popular literary work about Valmiera, Pāvils Rozītis’ novel ”The Boys of Valmiera”, are immortalized in a sculpture by sculptor Timiana Munkēvica. Initially the sculpture was placed in front of Valmiera Museum, but since 2007 it has been standing in front of Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences. The prototypes of the main heroes are: the author of the novel, Pāvils Rozītis, poet Linards Laicens, and as regards the third image, there is no clear answer. There is a supposition that the third boy was intentionally left unidentified so that everybody could associate it with oneself and in this way the sculpture reflects the spirit of freedom and awakening. The sculpture “The Boys of Valmiera” suits well to Valmiera and in a way, it brings luck to its people. Many talented boys who brought fame to Latvia, were born in Valmiera, like two-times Olympic champion in BMX cycling Māris Štrombergs, silver medal winner in 4-men bobsleigh in XXII Winter Olympic Games, Oskars Melbārdis, the world famous race walker Jānis Daliņš, composer Jāzeps Vītols, EU Development and Cooperation Commissioner Andris Piebalgs, actors, producers, composers and many other talents.
